The Big Build

Introduction

This six week design-build summer studio brings together craft and material to be researched and utilized by students and professionals of all disciplines as they are guided by architects and craftsmen to construct a permanent and useful structure for the citizens of Hangzhou. The studio is held from July 8th to August 18th. In addition to designing and building a full scale structure, students will be exposed to the local culture through museum visits, hikes and tours of raw material sourcing & manufacturing operations.

Tuition

The total tuition cost for The Big Build 2019 is $4,300 USD (29,000元).

The tuition includes:

1. A single air-conditioned bedroom.
2. Three meals every day.
3. All building materials and tools.
4. Insurance valid in the local Chinese healthcare system.
5. Transportation into the city on weekends.
6. Field trip expenses.

The tuition does not include:

1. Airfare and related transportation.

Tuition is to be paid in full before June 8th, 2019. If you do not wish to process your payment through the Paypal portal you can contact us about using Alipay (支付宝).

Deposit

The deposit for The Big Build 2019 is $1,500 USD (10,000元). The deposit amount will be subtracted from your final tuition cost.

Upon submitting the deposit you will be notified of the confirmation that your position for The Big Build 2019 is reserved. You will then be eligible to apply for The Big Build Scholarship.

Scholarship

All students who have submitted their deposits for The Big Build 2019 are eligible for The Big Build Scholarship. In order to apply for The Big Build Scholarship all applicants must submit the following:

1. A portfolio ( PDF format < 15mb ) that reflects your current work.
2. A written response exploring the relationship of design-build to your own work and process. This response should be written in English and not exceed 1,000 words. Responses in Mandarin are also encouraged but must also be accompanied with an English submission.

All submissions must be sent to mail@hadc.org.cn with the subject title "The Big Build Scholarship_(insert your name here)"

Deadline for submission is May 31st, 2019. Award notifications will be sent out mid-June.

Should you be awarded The Big Build scholarship your tuition will be fully covered, with your deposit being refunded upon the completion of the studio.
